Whether you’re seeking a peaceful stretch of sand to unwind, a vibrant coastal town with plenty of activities, or a scenic spot to catch the sunset, San Diego’s beach towns have it all. From laid-back vibes to stunning ocean views, these destinations are ideal for weekend trips or daycations. Here’s a guide to the best beach towns in San Diego County that every travel nurse should visit for a dose of sun, surf, and serenity

Local tip: San Diego County is a huge county and is home to over 3 million people. The locals often refer to different sections of the county as, "North County", "East County" and "South Bay".  North County includes cities near Oceanside and Carlsbad.  East County, includes cities like El Cajon and La Mesa. Lastly, South Bay refers to towns like Chula Vista and Imperial Beach.

Let's dive into the top beach towns you should visit in San Diego County:

1. Oceanside

First stop, Oceanside! Located in North County, this beach town is known for its wide sandy beaches and historic Oceanside pier. The pier was first constructed in 1987 and is the longest wooden over-water pier on the West Coast.

2. Carlsbad

Next up, Carlsbad! This charming beach town offers a mix of beautiful beaches, shopping at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, and family-friendly adventures.

If you are traveling with kids after a visit to the beach stop by Legoland for more adventure!  Don't miss a visit to the Flower Fields when in season or relax at one of the city's top spas, the Miraval Spa at the Park Hyatt Aviara

3. Encinitas

Encinitas, a coastal gem offers a perfect blend of laid-back beach vibes and vibrant culture.  For a unique beach experience, Moonlight State Beach is a must-visit, to view all the different rocks that line the coastline. If you're into surfing, Swami’s Beach is renowned for its surf breaks and laid-back atmosphere. Encinitas is also home to the San Diego Botanic Garden, a lush oasis filled with exotic plants and tranquil walking paths.  Finally, explore the local shops, galleries, and organic cafés on Coast Highway 101 for a taste of Encinitas!

If you are visiting on a Sunday, check out their weekly Farmers Market.

5. Del Mar

Del Mar exudes luxury and sophistication, attracting visitors with its upscale boutiques, gourmet restaurants, and the popular Torrey Pines State Beach. Take a leisurely walk along the coastline at Del Mar Beach and soak in the breathtaking ocean views. For a laid-back and bohemian vibe, head to Ocean Beach, also known as "OB". This beach town is known for its hippie culture, vintage shops, and dog-friendly beach. One of my favorite places to visit when I'm in OB is a local Cuban bakery called Azucar! They have some of the best pastries. When visiting on a Wednesday, be sure to visit their weekly farmers market!

10. Coronado
